Welcome to Bill's Air Race Addicts Homepage!
Hi, my name is Bill and I am a Reno Air Race junkie. This year will be my 18th year in a row at Reno. My wife believes I have a sickness, but what a sickness it is. I have several friends who have been traveling to Air Race Mecca with me for most of the last 18.The first time I went to the Reno Air Races was in 1974.
I will never forget seeing the Red Baron in her early years, nor will I forget Rare Bear in hers, (or Sumthin'Else,or Precious Metal, or Stiletto, Tsunami, Strega, Bud Light Special, (All Coast Super Corsair), or the Leeward Air Ranch Special, Dreadnought, or Habu or.......Yes,I was there in "82" when Dago Red won straight out of the box. I have since become recognized as a member of the BACK-STRAIGHT BUMS. The process of going to Reno and the accomodations have changed over the years,
from camping out in pup-tents in the desert and waking up to a dusting of snow, to different motels, different camping scenarios,
(once with my daughter who was 20 months old at the time. I left her mom at home with the 11 month old.), sleeping in cars and vans, to the latest and greatest. That would be the 29 foot Class C motorhome, with handy home-spun awning, 5kW generator, (for the Margarita blender and for charging the video camera batteries), the beds, (to replace that fine Nevada dust and HARD ground), the shower, and most importantly, THE FRIG, (for ice for the blender). This would be life in the desert for the moment, (However, there's a nasty rumor that we are graduating to a Class A for this year). Of course I would be remiss in not mentioning the ever present afternoon dust devils, the Tiki Torches and the always cold Miller Genuine Draft. We are even using GPS to find our campsite, (among other clandestine activities that I cannot discuss here). The next thing to bring would be a PC or Laptop to play with MS Flight Sim between Unlimited Races. I have a million pictures that I would love to share and will as I learn more about building a Web Page. I know there are some great sites out there( The Best Air Race Website )that I could display them in, but I need to learn this for myself.More About Myself
I am an A&P Mechanic, working for a Regional Airline in the NW US. My favorite thing, (next to my family), is..Drumroll please... AIRPLANES. Surprised? I flew on them in the Navy, my dad flew them in the Air Force,I built hundreds of plastic models as a kid, progressed to radio control as my wealth and affluence increased..... Oh! Oh!Oh! Hi, my name is Bill and I am addicted to FAST airplanes. (NOTE: Best Viewed with Netscape). If you like what you see, please let me know at [email protected].
Late Breaking News
It has come to my attention through the courtesy of Wayne at AAFO.COM, that the Unlimited course has been shortened somewhat. I superimposed the new map onto the old map, (once again, thanks Wayne for making the maps available online), to give some idea as to what the change will mean. Through discussions with my friend "FedX Bob", we think that the aircraft could conceivably have faster speeds with the course in this configuration. They won't have to make such a hard turn at the north end, like they did before. This might allow for a smoother turn and not require them to loose as much speed, by having to pull back so hard to make the turn. On the other hand, any time that you put pressure on the flight controls, you increase drag and slow the plane. This new course would have them in a bank longer than before, yet not as steep as before, it appears. The long two straightaways have been shortened as well. (The highest speeds were down the back straight). I guess we will find out in about a week. (Update Sept 22, 1999 My theory wins! The highest speeds were as high, (if not higher), than previous years. The Gold on Sunday this year was won by Dago Red at 472.) Any conspiracy theorists out there are welcome to write and give your thoughts. I will include any other ideas that come forth on this page. I am sorry for the lack of update here. Work, a trip to Alaska for fishing, home stuff, and all the other things that are a part of life have kept me away from the computer. III'mmmmm BBBaaaaaccckkkk!!!
